Introduction
About Prenatal Safety
"Is it safe?" is the first question nearly every expectant guest asks, and it deserves a specific answer rather than reassurance. For a healthy, uncomplicated pregnancy, massage is widely considered safe when the session is properly adapted.
Here is exactly what that adaptation looks like at ZionZen, so you know what to expect and what to ask for anywhere else.

In session
What to expect
- Side-lying positioning, not a belly cutout
- You'll rest on your side supported by cushions between the knees, under the belly, and at the chest. Belly-hole tables can leave the low back unsupported and put strain on the round ligaments, so we don't use them.
- Limited and slow position changes
- You'll change sides once, slowly, with help. Extended flat-on-your-back time is avoided after roughly the mid-point of pregnancy because it can compress a major vein and make you lightheaded. A slight incline is used instead if you prefer to be face-up.
- Moderate, responsive pressure
- Pregnancy loosens ligaments, so joints are more mobile than usual. Your therapist works muscle rather than forcing joints, and checks pressure more often than in a standard session.
- Careful areas
- Deep abdominal work is not performed. Work on the lower legs stays gentle and light rather than deep, and your therapist will ask about any leg pain, warmth, or swelling before starting.
- You can stop or shift at any point
- Comfort is the measure of a good prenatal session. Saying "I need to move" is expected, not disruptive.
Evidence
What current research suggests
Professional bodywork standards call for side-lying or semi-reclined positioning after the first trimester, avoidance of sustained supine positioning later in pregnancy, and no deep abdominal work.
Massage is a complementary comfort measure. It supplements prenatal medical care and never replaces it.

Therapist recommendations
Tell your therapist how far along you are, any complications, and anything your provider has flagged — even if it seems unrelated.
Eat something beforehand. Low blood sugar is the most common reason a guest feels off during a session.
Stand up slowly afterward and rehydrate before driving.
If your provider has restricted your activity for any reason, get their clearance before booking.
